Dear Future I am Ready: Abby

Abby - A woman that has the strength to have a family and go after her own dreams

Education: One semester left to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources (I went to Graphic Design school for two years, as well as teaching for a semester, then moved on to the business classes - This degree has been a long time coming to say the least!).
Nationality: American
Age: 28
Previous International Experience: Stationed in Wiesbaden & Bamberg, Germany for 3 years with my husband who serves in the US Army.
Challenge: Finding myself in the midst of being a wife and mother, student, sister, daughter . . .
Result: Flourishing as a wife and mother, while achieving my goals of graduating with a degree, as well as branching out into the world of entrepreneurship to ensure a stable/better future for my children.
Hobbies: Art will always be a part of my life, whether it’s through pen and paper, sewing, knitting, crafting, photography, or anything else I can get my hands on. I love to read and educate myself daily. Basically, I want to experience everything this wonderful life has to offer, even if it’s only one time (i.e.-I took a flight lesson at 18 because I was sure I would grow up and be a pilot someday, my stomach didn’t agree!)

Where to begin . . .
My story seems to be very different from those that have already been featured here.  I think we all started in the same place, with the same sort of dreams and idealistic desires that anyone has fresh out of high school or college with the whole world at your fingertips.  Life is all about choices though, and every single thing we do has an effect on us in some way, big or small.  In the middle of trying to find myself after a broken engagement (long story), and some trouble with financial backing for school, I met someone that changed the course of my life forever.

You know when you’re in that place, where you don’t want to look anymore and you want nothing to do with anyone or anything?  That’s where I was.  I wasn’t looking for anything, I just wanted to survive the next few months without trouble until I figured myself out.  Then I met a man in the Army from upstate New York.  He was everything I thought I never wanted.  A hockey player, when I had always dated cowboys, blonde and rather short too, when I usually went for the tall dark and handsome type. I am from Colorado originally, and I went to high school in Montana, so the thought of being with someone from the east coast seemed absurd.  It’s funny how things change when you’ve met the one that your heart desires - Well, to make a long story short, we got married, we have two fabulous children, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

I know that sounds cliché’, and it is, but it’s true.  I cannot imagine my life without these three beings in it.  However, I think things would be very different without them too.  What I mean is this:  When you have a child, your whole world changes.  You will never fully understand that until you experience it for yourself.  My life was no longer my own.  It belonged to a person that couldn’t even feed herself yet.  So, as it happens with many women, my plans and dreams were set aside.  I had much more important things to do now than tend to my own needs.  I also had a deployed husband, who would deal with his own set of issues upon his return, and we’d have to find our way back to a happy place somehow.

A little about tying the knot . . .
Fortunately, my husband is very supportive and encouraging of me and my dreams.  He pushes me and challenges me to do things I want and need to do.  So here is some advice in the department of marriage: who you marry does matter.  Find someone that will dream with you.  Find someone that will be there to keep your inner fire going when you are unable to do it for yourself.  Find someone, that when all the love fluff is gone, you still have a foundation to stand on.  It will be very important because you have to choose to love that person every day, even when it doesn’t feel easy or right.  Ok, moving on.  My point is that my husband is wonderful and has always allowed me (don’t take that the wrong way) the space to choose what I want and need.  He was on board when we decided that I would stay home with our children instead of going back to work right away.  He was on board when I went back to school.  He was on board when I decided to embark on my new journey with the company I joined in April.  He has been my rock when I didn’t even know where to find a rock, if you catch my drift.
It’s about the journey, not the destination . . .
So, while it may take some time, and while I have had to give up a lot of myself for the sake of my family, it has been so worth it.  Now I can finish some things I started out doing, and I can show my kids that it’s possible.  All you have to do is have a drive and motivation and someone on your team to keep you going when you want to give up.  I am two terms away from my first bachelor’s degree, and I am well on my way with the company I work for now that is changing our financial future.  Sometimes, you just need a little patience and a lot of faith and things will all come together.

My story was also complicated by the fact that my husband is in the Army and we moved every 8-18 months for 6 years.  Try holding down a job as a mother of two in that environment.  And then, try to keep your sanity when that husband deploys and you are left by yourself to raise your children and deal with the daily grind of life.  He didn't only deploy once, but twice, and those deployments were long ones especially if you need to run a family by yourself. Motherhood can be so isolating.  Some days it was all I could do not to stalk people at the commissary with the same age of children as myself just to find a friend.  At the end of the day though, we have two great kids that are surprisingly well-adjusted, and they know they are loved and cared for.  And my husband knows that our vows meant something because I’m still here, even after everything life has thrown at us.
Most importantly, I have found a way to be a stay at home mom, wife, and student, and still contribute to our family financially.  While money isn’t everything, it sure helps if you have a little.  So, about a year ago I seriously started searching for something I could do that would enable me to stay at home with my kids, while still allowing me the opportunity to bring in some income on the side.  By the grace of God, in February of 2013, I was introduced to It Works! Global.  I still thought about it for two months, but I finally got to the point where I figured I had to try it.  So, here I am.  An Independent Distributor with this amazing, faith-based company, and it’s changing our lives.  I can contribute a little each month and I feel better about myself because I get to help people every day and get paid for it.  I can bless my family and others in need and it’s only getting better.

What I love most about this, is that I can show other mother’s that they can change their lives.  I can show people struggling with health and wellness.  I get to honestly help people, every day, while still being available to my family when they need me.  How could I pass up an opportunity like that?  The best part is, it really was zero risk. I can choose at any time to walk away, but I choose to better myself, I choose to better my family’s well-being, and my husband and I have chosen to make a better future for our children. So what do I do? At this direct sale company I help people to get on a better track for being healthy with our products which can help to do exactly that. The other side is the opportunity, and we also help people get wealthy, while they're getting healthy.

Never, never, never give up . . .
The point of my rambling is that, you can do things that make you happy, as well as things that you need to do.  You can have the best of both worlds.  You may have to dig a little deeper to find it, but it is out there!  Find your middle ground and don’t settle.  Have faith, have fun, and most of all, enjoy the ride.

Dear Future I am Ready: Uli

Ulrike - a women that cherishes the little things and keeps looking at advancing herself
Education: High school and a tremendous amount of "real life" lessons learned
Nationality: German
Age: 23
Previous International Experience: Three years as an Au-Pair in the USA. Moved around with her family (host family which became her second real one) and made the American dream come true
Challenge: It was time to move on. To do something different. To think long term. But what to study and where? How to get over the great time that she had?
Result: Uli is back in Germany and although she is still seeing and experiencing the cultural differences she will now start her studies in American/British studies combined with Management classes. The next challenge is arising though :) Getting settles in a completely new city with a new objective and new goals
Hobbies: Basketball, Music and Dancing

Inevitable change
Well, hallo people out there. Isn't it incredible how life changes with the years and some changes are huge like different countries, some changes are small like trying a new drink at Starbucks and some tiny changes we don't even realize because our world/life became so hectic. I'm standing in front of a new chapter in my life, the chapter is called - going to university! Isn't it hard enough to let go of the past and the old habits, now I have to adjust to new things, new ways of life and the hardest part for me, to decide what do I want do for the rest of my life. Of course every new step in life brings you further and keeps you moving - and I guess that's what it is all about.

Let me introduce myself
By the way I'm Ulrike and 23 years young, after almost 3 years living in the United States I'm back in Germany and in October I start school at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz. Like I said, this big change coming back to my home country from the U.S. was tough for me or let's say it's still tough but it's getting easier day by day. I just miss the little things like going shopping on a Sunday, the friendly and open way random people smile at you, the good service of the Americans and of course I miss my three little kiddos I took care of, for so long.
Moving on, tackling the next challenge
Letting go of the past is important though. I mean you take all the great memories with you and some you will never forget but you need to make new memories and that is as important as looking back on amazing times you had. The scariest part in my life right now is to get settled in a new city, find new friends and accomplish great work in school. But now when I think about it, it's not that frightened anymore because I have done this before and I feel like "hell yea I can do this again!" One other aspect I'm telling myself, is that all the other freshman's in school must feel the same way, they are new and so am I.

Beginning of something new and uncertain
It's a new challenge and I've learned that new beginnings in life can be tough, really tough, so tough that you think about quitting but you got to fight through the hard times and I'll promise better times will come and at the end everything will pay off.
Plans, plans, plans
My plans for the future are to get my degree in American/British Studies plus Management, to enjoy my time as a student, to stay focused when my laziness is fighting against deadlines, to meet more great and inspiring people like Taty, to get an scholarship for a semester abroad, to laugh more, to appreciate more what I have, to help more other people, to realize the great little moments in life, to try my best whatever it is I do. We all are looking for happiness in life, for the one it's a lot of money or the nice things that come with money, for the other one it's to be around with family and friends but at the end it doesn't matter what it is for the other people, you got to find what makes you happy and live your life the way you want it to be!

Goodbye and Inspiration
Thank you guys for reading my little story - here my favorite quote that always helps me out:

Thank you Uli! Can't wait to enjoy another wine with you in the US! :) You go girl! And I am sure that we can expect a second entry from you on this blog :)

Dear Future I am Ready: Henriette

Henni - A girl that is ready for her next steps and some adventurous travel prior to starting her studies

Education: Currently in High School pursuing her A-level (Graduation in 2014°°)
Age: 17 Previous Experience on the job: Internship in surgery department, ability to make the most delicious pizza in Bamberg (or potentially the WORLD) :), diverse office jobs Dream Vacation: Travelling the world with a backpack, tent and my closest friends Challenge: To motivate myself and to become clear about what I want
Result: Made the decision to enjoy life a little after university to broaden my horizon prior to my studies. I am too eager to travel and to fall in love with another city like Paris :) However, I will certainly continue to figure out if medicine is really what I want to study.

My mind is spinning...
For me, this summer is my "last summer" while being in school. You could say that it is sort of a "season of change". It feels like I am sitting in a time machine which is taking me with the speed of light to my next destination. Meanwhile I sit there looking at the world that is running without knowing how to influence any of it. There are so many questions about the future, uncertainties and dreams... Where am I going to be in five years? With whom? What will I be doing? Is it the thing I now think that I want to do or will it even surpass my imagination? Now I am hoping to be studying medicine in a city I wanted to be and not being different than I am now.

Plans...
As I said I am hoping to get into a university in order to study medicine. I have to admit that the reason for this is Dr. House. I loved this series but it made me think whether working in a clinic is like that or not and as I expected, it was completely different. But I liked it, even more than the Dr. House imagination. So now I am craving for the possibility of learning how the human body works, how we can come back on our feet after being so weak. But not only the subject-specific skills seem to be interesting.

The ethic problems which a medic is facing every day is difficult but worth thinking about. I just had a very interesting conversation with a doctor about the problem that fatally ill patient not have the chance of dying with dignity anymore. That made me think. I can’t understand why sometimes the medicine forces a patient to live without even knowing if his wish is dying in dignity or living for (mostly) more than one week with pain, supported by machines. Answering questions like these and knowing everything about the human body are the most important reasons why I wish to study medicine.
But like I said, I am HOPING of receiving the chance to study medicine and to contribute to solving these sort of problems. The tricky aspect in Germany is that the grades in high school influence if you get into this or that university - A criteria which is in my opinion very problematic. Even though my grades aren't bad, I think that more emphasize should be put on the personal characteristics of a future doctor. Nobody wants to be treated by a "professional robot" who knows only what makes the body of a patient feel better, but not the mind. Unfortunately not getting into a university isn’t the only fear I have. What happens if the picture I’ve painted is completely different to the reality? What should I do if this occurs? I have no answer to that.

Next steps...
After my A-Level everything’s becomes different. The good thing about not getting directly into university is that I am going to have more time than I ever had. Even if a “Work and Travel” (which almost everyone around me is planning to do) experience seems to be attractive I want to be independent it’s going to be the first time I don’t have any duties. I want to be free and do something on my own!! I want to get to know Asia, maybe learning some Thai. I want to be spontaneous and I hope to get to know these cultures a bit more. As the saying says: collect memories not things!

Now it sounds like I just want to get away from Europe which is definitely wrong. Right now I am planning a trip to Istanbul about which I am very excited. Turkey is so rich of cultural treasures I can’t wait to regard them all. The last thing I am hoping to do in this spare is visiting Paris for at least a month for improving my French. Paris was love a first sight. Our romance began on my 15th birthday which I celebrated there with my mother. Even though it was cold and foggy my heart was on flames. Never in my live I visited a city which was so beautiful and breathtaking. When I wandered through the “Marais” I felt enchanted. The hidden fountains, the incredibly beautiful small houses and the smile on the inhabitants’ faces was a rush of endorphins. Since than I visited my love affair every year. And every time I am there learn more things about it. Parc de Buttes-Chaumont is my hidden wonderland and Belleville my secret capital of Pâtisserie.

About my future career wish...
The only thing I can do, is jumping out of this time machine, not letting the world running next to me and seizing the last year with my friends in school and the fantastic experiences I am going to make in my youth!!

°°° Thank you Henni! I hope to get a couple of postcards from your wild travel :) And that we eventually still get the chance to play some tennis every now and then :)

Dear Future I am Ready (well. kind of. maybe): Eugenia

Education: Bachelor Degree in International Business and Management
Nationality: German & Russian
Age: 22
Previous international experience: Born in Uzbekistan, lived in Ukraine & Russia. Immigrated with family to Germany at the age of 11 & went to school there. Went to university in Holland & Denmark.
Hobbies: Languages, music, tennis, traveling
Challenge: Discovering what I want & like (in terms of job)
Result: An everlasting process

The real working life
In the 8th grade German schools start to prepare you for your future career, meaning: learning how to write motivational letters and CV’s (with so far basically two entrances: 1. primary school 2. high school) and short internships where you are supposed to gain an insight into the “real working life”. I did mine at the hairdresser. After the 3 weeks he gave me 50 € and said I’d better not become a hairdresser.

I will sacrifice my first son to the god of marketing
I’ve finished my A-Levels in some sort of a trade school with focus on business administration and languages (English), so it made sense for 18-year-old-me to start university in that field. International Business and Management, in the Netherlands, in English: seemed legit. 4 years, many hours of marking in expensive business books, 1 internship in product marketing, 1 semester in service management in Denmark, 1 bachelor thesis about online marketing, new friends, parties, all type of important mind-shaping experiences and theoretically a pretty big load of knowledge later, I am done: Bachelor of Business Administration & adult.
I have been waiting for that moment for a long time. Now that it is here it is much less spectacular than I expected it to be. I could have become a doctor, an architect, or a carpenter or a veterinary assistant (my brother’s dream of the perfect job for a woman), in one word, a job where you really learn something which you cannot unlearn.  Me, however, have a feeling that I was conducting personal development for the last 4 years. This is also pretty OK.
I am not saying that all of it is bad. Marketing is pretty interesting. But I don’t remember telling anyone “Marketing is my passion, my grandfather and great grandfather were marketing experts and so will be my son!”

Can I internship as a princess somewhere … please?
During a 6-month internship in the product marketing department of some major German car manufacturer I had the chance to discover that it is simply not the industry I would like to work in. I realised that people working there have a real passion for cars. During lunch time, on the way home, before work and after work: they do talk about cars a lot. And it’s nice that they love what they do. The only thing is: I don’t. Therefore it is would be only logical for me to continue "internshipping" to find what I would love to talk about during my lunch breaks.
But that is what we are all doing the internships for. To check it out. It was definitively worth the experience. It was challenging & gave me an insight into the professional business life.
I am 22. The 20ies shape our future and it is the most important time of a person’s life. The decisions made during this period are just of incredible importance. They shape the whole life in some way. And it is really time to act in order to invest in the future. All I see in front of me is a big black hole with rotating question marks in it (imagine a gif here).

THE OPTIONS
Think. Be rational. You are a university graduate. You have proof on paper that you are smart, educated, dedicated and motivated. In theory, my possibilities are endless. Here are some:
  • Go work in profession learned
  • Go work somewhere in order to earn money
  • Find an internship
  •  Continue studying, Master’s degree
  • Start a new study
  • Do a voluntary year (social, ecological, army)
  • Travel, see option 2
  •  Time-out for “finding oneself”, see option 2
  • Get pregnant, become a housewife, waste thousands of euros spend on higher education
  •  Dig for gold, literally

Should I get a new cat?
Is it possible that I will just end up doing nothing, alone, with two new cats? Sitting at home and slowly starting to enjoy afternoon reality TV about troubled families.
So, now with 22 and a business degree, I am still the same 10 year old girl who would answer “something with animals” when asked for what I would like to do in the future. I am pretty sure I am not the only one. In some way everybody has do go through that.

Brace yourself. Change is coming.
It is just that some big period in one’s life comes to an end and a new one is going is to start. The time between these two is frightening but, on the other hand, it’s cool because I am very curious what’s coming next. I am pretty positive.
For my part, I will move in together with a special someone. And because of this special someone I have also decided that Bonn, Germany’s former capital, is going to be the next station in my life. Interesting, how these special someone’s come into your life and take a big biiiig part of you and your life.

I am also enrolled for law studies now.

Why?
Because I can
…(and want).
